IB Assessment & Grades
Assessment in our top IB Diploma Programme in Latvia is a combination of internal assessments (evaluated by teachers) and external assessments (graded by external IB examiners). This can include written exams, essays, oral presentations, and practical coursework, depending on the subject.
Each of the six subjects is graded on a scale of 1 to 7, with 7 being the highest. The TOK and Extended Essay core components can contribute an additional 3 points, bringing the IB's maximum possible score to 45 points.
All grades are associated with 18 clear IB guidelines which explain the standard achieved by each pupil.
IB vs Latvian National Curriculum
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in our leading IB school in Riga provides a more holistic and globally focused education compared to the Latvian national curriculum offered in other schools. The IBDP employs an interdisciplinary approach, encouraging students to explore various fields while also allowing specialisation in areas of interest and fostering global awareness. IB students choose six subjects from different disciplines, complete a Theory of Knowledge course, engage in creativity, activity, and service (CAS), and write an extended essay. In contrast, the Latvian curriculum follows a more fixed set of subjects aligned with national education standards and local cultural context, offering less flexibility.
The IBDP provides a globally recognised qualification that can be used to apply to top universities worldwide, including those in Latvia. While the Latvian National Curriculum is a solid choice for learners aiming to pursue higher education in Latvia or nearby European countries, it does not offer a globally recognised qualification.
How is an IB Diploma useful?
Offering a globally recognised and accepted secondary school qualification, the IBDP opens a world of opportunities for future university studies and careers. Additionally, the IB develops a well-rounded skill set for lifelong success anywhere in the world.
