Cambridge IGCSE Subjects
The Cambridge IGCSE offers a broad, flexible and challenging curriculum. Students can choose from a wide range of subjects, allowing them to tailor the curriculum to their needs and interests. At our school, students take nine IGCSEs in Year 11.
Core Subjects
Our IGCSE Cambridge students will need to study the following core subjects, with an option of science:
- IGCSE English Language (External Examination)
- IGCSE English Literature (External Examination)
- IGCSE Mathematics (External Examination)
- IGCSE Global Perspectives (External Examination)
Progress made in Year 10 will inform the decision regarding the science pathway, Triple or Coordinated. The Triple Science pathway includes an individual IGCSE in each natural science – Chemistry, Biology and Physics, providing 3 IGCSEs.
Optional Subjects
In addition to the core subjects, students in our IGCSE course in Riga must choose either one Humanities subject and one Creative Arts & Sports subject, or two Humanities subjects. However, History and Global Perspectives cannot be chosen together, nor can two Creative Arts and Sports subjects be selected.

How to Make the Best Subject Choices?
Thoughtful consideration of interests, abilities, and future goals is essential when choosing International General Certificate of Secondary Education subjects. Our expert IGCSE teachers provide personalised support throughout this process, and students are encouraged to speak with older students to gain more insights into specific options. Additionally, they should consult our university counsellors to understand which subjects are required for certain university courses. Whenever possible, students should align their IGCSE subject choices with their future university and career aspirations.
Students should always select subjects that genuinely interest them, as enjoyment enhances motivation and performance. Additionally, our teachers will help students evaluate their personal strengths and weaknesses to identify subjects in which they can excel, both in IGCSE and IBDP.
At this stage, it is recommended to keep a broad range of subjects, especially English and Mathematics, which are often required for higher education and careers. Specific fields (such as medicine and architecture) may require specific subjects.
